Good afternoon guys,
A magnitude 6.6 earthquake struck southeast Taiwan early this morning (March 23) at 1:41 a.m., followed two minutes later by a magnitude 6.1 quake, according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB).
The epicenter of the first temblor was 62.6 kilometers south of Hualien County Hall, with a focal depth of 30.6 km.
Like many people, my wife and I were woken up by the shake. I tried to remain calm and think about the next step I should take. Not surprisingly, my son was sleeping soundly.
Chen Kuo-chang (陳國昌), head of the CWB’s Seismological Center, said that the magnitude 6.6 earthquake was the strongest earthquake recorded in Taiwan this year and the two subsequent earthquakes were likely to be the aftershocks of that powerful quake. (source)
He also said aftershocks over magnitude 5.5 could be expected in the next three days in Hualien and Taitung.
I hope everyone, including my family and friends, stay safe and sound.
Have a nice day.
